Build My Business

How do I build up business as a Gardner?

I have been unemployed for sometime now and I would like to go self employed. The other day I had some business cards printed up and place one up in a shop notice board. I also posted a few though doors. I know its early days, but I haven’t had a single phone call. Any suggestion on how to build up my customer base?

Tough starting out with any business like this. It takes a while to build up a client base with the resulting repeat business, and the word of mouth advertising.

This is what I would do. Drive or walk around various neighborhoods assessing both the income levels of the residents and the types of gardening that might be needed. Concentrate all your advertising there and if there are nearby businesses with bullitin board advertise in those too.

Make some flyers in addition to business cards. Put the flyers up wherever there is foot traffic and go door-to-door with the cards. Don’t ring people’s bells, that would be too creepy. Instead stick a card in their door frame or above their buzzer.

You have got to cover a lot of ground and get your ad seen by hundreds of potential clients.

Another idea is oriented only to the spring yard clean-up season but would bring you repeat business also. Make some flyers about getting the yard ready for Spring and attach one of your card. Stick these on doors or under windshield wipers in the neighborhoods that you’d most like to work in.

Can you do something besides gardening? I am a gardener but living where I do making a living from it isn’t feasible as the season is too short. My bread and butter is my cleaning business. I also do pet sitting and sporadically sell some of my art.

You CAN do it. The important thing is finding that first client and making them happy, then the second…

Best of luck to you.
